Exuma has the reputation of being one of the best locations for the sport of bonefishing and Valerie’s cottages are right by one of the favorite spots to enjoy this activity. There are numerous guides you can hire to help you, or go it alone, your choice. Bonefish are an addictive challenge to the fly fishing enthusiast.
For the deep sea fishing enthusiast Doug has his Hatteras ready to take you offshore to find that once in a lifetime sailfish. Or maybe the Mahi-Mahi are running and will provide you with some sport and an excellent dinner. If you prefer, you can try bottom fishing. Then you anchor the boat in your guides recommended location and you might get that large grouper you were dreaming about. If not a grouper then how about some snapper?
Great Exuma is surrounded by smaller islands and around and between them are hundreds of coral reefs making the area a magnet for Scuba divers. DiveExuma is here to guide you to the best reefs and wrecks. Even on the few occasions when the wind picks up and makes diving in the open ocean uncomfortable you can retreat to the sheltered waters of Elizabeth Harbor and find more reefs in shallow waters.
Exuma is famous for the unforgettable colors of the water and clarity all enabling you to appreciate the creatures and colors as you snorkel this aquatic paradise.
One of the fastest growing sports is kite boarding and Exuma excels because which ever direction the wind is blowing there is a perfect spot to fly. One of the favorites is off the shallows around Moriah Cay just a stones throw from Valerie’s cottages.
Lessons are available from local experts.
Because Exuma is just one of over 350 islands that make up the The Exuma Cays a boat trip through the islands is a fabulous way to spend a whole day. The trip will take you close to many islands including the private retreats of David Copperfield, Faith Hill and Johnny Depp. They all fell in love with this area and so will you. Visit an island where you can swim with sharks, another where wild pigs will swim out to the boat in the hope of some food. Stop at a yacht club for a Bahamian lunch and swim in Thunderball Cave.
Elizabeth Harbor is a large protected area of Ocean surrounded by Great Exuma on one side and a string of offshore islands including Stocking Island, Elizabeth Cay and Guana Cay. Between the islands are coral reefs for to explore and on some islands there are restaurants on some that are well worth a visit. All these delights plus the ability to visit many sandy beaches and coves, can be enjoyed when you rent a boat from Minn’s Water Sports.
Valerie has a selection of kayaks at her dock and they are there for your enjoyment. Take a leisurely paddle across the sheltered waters to Moriah Cay, less than a mile, and explore this marine sanctuary. Yours will probably be the only footprints in the sand as you walk through the shallows of the inland lake or just lay on the white sand beach and catch a tan. For the more adventurous there are routes through the mangroves which lead out to the Ocean.
Daryn opened his restaurant and quickly gained a great reputation for his specialty Conch Salad. Located on the beach in Steventon Big D’s is well worth the trip. In season his lobster specials are fresh and mighty tasty.
Santana’s restaurant is out East in WilliamsTown on Little Exuma. This beachside eatery is run by Dee your host and chef. Enjoy her fresh lobster or fresh fish and her generous portions. Ask Dee to show you her photo album from the time when Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed here. If Santana’s is good enough for Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom then I feel sure you will enjoy the fare.
The first hotel in Exuma is located in the capital George Town and named after the ship that
Lord John Rolle owned to bring his family and slaves from The Carolinas after the war of Independence; The Peace and Plenty. This quaint hotel has been renovated many times and is open to non residents for meals. Located on the edge of Elizabeth Harbor providing a beautiful setting to watch the yacht in the harbor. The menu includes some Bahamian specialities plus some more international basics.
Cocoplum Beach is located on the beach in the center of a beautiful bay with the turquoise waters breaking on the soft sand beach. After a delicious meal of fresh fish or lobster many contented guests walk the shoreline searching for sand dollars. Note: only take the white ones, the grey ones are still alive. Cocoplum Restaurant is a short distance West of Sandals Resort.
Chat N Chill Restaurant is a boat ride from George Town over on Stocking Island. The owner/operator “K B” has been catering to the needs of visitors for some years and is the most reliable in terms of always being open. His Sunday pig roast is renown and attracts large crowds. Rent a boat from Minns Water Sports, or use the water taxi to get there. Spend the afternoon working off those calories on the volleyball court or explore the waters edge where you may well find friendly sting rays. These silky smooth creatures are harmless (unless you tread on them) and looking for food scraps.
